The number of hours is less telling than what happens when the screen goes off, what the screen has replaced, and whether your child can still enjoy things that are not on it. This article gives you the thresholds the research supports, the six signs that matter more than the clock, and a plan for reducing screen time that does not turn into a nightly fight.

The numbers, briefly

Health bodies give firm limits only for young children: none under 18 months (apart from video calls), up to an hour of good-quality content for 2 to 5-year-olds. For school-age children and teens, the American Academy of Pediatrics stopped giving a number in 2016 and asked families to protect sleep, exercise and schoolwork instead. Our screen time by age guide covers the guidelines in detail.

What the research does show for older children is a pattern rather than a line. Studies of large groups of children find little difference in wellbeing between those on one hour a day and those on two. Problems become more common above three to four hours of entertainment screen time a day, and clearest of all when screens cut into sleep. So if you want a working threshold: under two hours of entertainment time on school days is comfortable, two to three is worth watching, and more than four is usually too much.

Six signs that matter more than the total

Sleep is suffering. Difficulty falling asleep, waking tired, or wanting a screen in bed. Light from screens delays melatonin, and exciting content keeps the brain alert. This is the sign with the strongest evidence behind it.

Ending screen time causes a meltdown. Some protest is normal, especially under 8. A pattern of rage, tears or aggression every time the screen goes off suggests the child is not regulating the transition and the screen has become too important.

Nothing else is fun any more. A child who used to draw, build, play outside or read and now describes all of it as boring is showing you that screens have raised the bar for stimulation.

Physical complaints. Headaches, sore or dry eyes, neck pain, and a drop in physical activity are all common with heavy use.

Focus has dropped. Trouble sticking with homework, a book or a longer game without checking a device. Short-form video is particularly associated with this.

Screens are replacing people. Preferring a device to friends who are physically present, or to family meals and conversation.

One of these is normal. Three or more at once, over several weeks, is a reason to act.

Why “just take the tablet away” rarely works

Abrupt removal tends to produce a worse version of the meltdown you were trying to avoid, and it teaches nothing about self-regulation. It also often fails on the parent’s side: after a week of conflict, the tablet comes back with no new rules, and the child learns that protest works. A better plan reduces the total gradually, changes what the screen time consists of, and uses tools rather than willpower to hold the line.

A four-week plan to reduce screen time

Week 1: Measure. Turn on Screen Time (iPhone) or Digital Wellbeing and Family Link (Android) and do nothing else. Look at the weekly report with your child. Most families are surprised, and seeing the number is more persuasive than being told it.

Week 2: Fix the edges. Before changing the total, change when and where. No screens in bedrooms overnight, none in the hour before bed, none at meals. These three rules reduce the harm more than cutting an hour from the middle of the afternoon.

Week 3: Change what it is made of. Replace the lowest-value screen time first. Autoplay video and short-form feeds go; games your child actively plays, video calls and learning apps stay. Set the device to require a learning task before entertainment apps open, so the first part of every session is spent on something worthwhile.

Week 4: Set the total. Now set a daily limit for entertainment apps using the device controls, with a different allowance for school days and weekends. Because the limit is enforced by the device, you are no longer the one saying no.

Replacing, not just removing

Children do not sit quietly with nothing to do when screens are reduced. Plan for the gap: a box of things that are only available during former screen time, a standing arrangement to go to the park, an audiobook, a family game after dinner. The first week will involve complaints of boredom. Boredom is where self-directed play starts; it passes within a few days if you do not fill it with a screen.

Where Applatch Kids fits

The hardest part of this plan is week 3, changing what screen time is made of, because it requires something to go in front of the apps your child wants. Applatch Kids does that automatically: entertainment apps stay locked until your child has completed a short daily quiz in maths, English or science, matched to their school year. The screen time still happens, and your child still chooses what they play, but every session starts with learning. Parents get a weekly report showing what was practised, which makes week 1 of the plan a habit rather than a one-off.

Download Applatch now on the Google Playstore and Apple store.

When to get more help

Talk to your GP or school if screen time is accompanied by a persistent change in mood, withdrawal from friends, a sharp fall in school performance, or if you suspect your child is being contacted or bullied online. Heavy screen use is sometimes a symptom of something else, and dealing with the screens alone will not fix it.

Frequently asked questions

Is 4 hours of screen time a day too much for a child? For entertainment use on a school day, yes for most children. It almost always displaces sleep or activity.

Is 2 hours of screen time too much for a 5-year-old? The guidelines say one hour of good-quality content at this age. Two hours is above that, but what the two hours contain matters: one hour of a learning game with a parent and one of a film is different from two hours of autoplay.

Does screen time cause ADHD? No. Heavy screen use is associated with attention difficulties in some studies, but the direction is unclear, and children with ADHD are also drawn to screens. If attention is a concern, speak to your GP.

Most parents who search this question already suspect the answer for their own child.
