The other half is the child, searching on a phone at 8 pm with a page of math untouched. The advice is the same for both, because the problem is the same: Motivation does not arrive before the homework begins. It shows up after the first five minutes. Everything below is about making those five minutes happen.

Why “just do it” fails

Homework avoidance is rarely laziness. It is usually one of four things: the task feels too big to start, the child does not know how to do it and is avoiding the feeling of being stuck, there is something more rewarding available (a phone, a game, a sibling playing), or the work has no visible payoff. Each of these has a different fix, and nagging addresses none of them.

For students: how to get motivated to do homework

Make the first step stupidly small. Not “do my maths”. Starting is the hard part; continuing is easy once you have started.

Put the phone in another room. Not face down or on silent. Put the phone entirely in another room. Every study on this finds that a phone within reach costs attention even when it is not used.

Use short timed blocks. Set a timer for 15 or 20 minutes, work until it rings, then take a five-minute break. Three blocks is an hour of real work, which is more than most people manage in two hours of “studying”.

Do the worst subject first. While you have the most energy, do your most feared task first. Leaving it until last means it never happens.

Decide the reward in advance. “When the two maths blocks are done, I play for 30 minutes.” Written down, where you can see it. Vague rewards do not pull; specific ones do.

If you are stuck, that is information, not failure. Write down exactly what you do not understand and move to the next question. Ask tomorrow. Sitting in front of a problem you cannot do is the fastest route to hating homework.

For parents: how to motivate a child to do homework

Fix the environment before the child. A set time, a set place, and devices out of reach. Homework in the bedroom with a phone is a losing position for any child and most adults.

Shrink the start. Ask your child to show you the first question, not to do the homework. Sit with them for the first two minutes. Then step back. Most resistance is about starting, and a parent at the table for two minutes gets past it without doing the work for them.

Make effort visible. Children keep going when they can see progress. A checklist, a chart, a streak, anything that shows yesterday’s work is still counted today. This is the single mechanic that games use and homework does not.

Separate “can’t” from “won’t.” If your child is avoiding a subject week after week, check whether they can do it. Ask them to explain the method to you. Gaps in understanding look exactly like laziness from the outside, and punishing them makes the gap worse.

Put the reward after the work, and let something other than you enforce it. “Games after homework” is the oldest rule in parenting, and it fails because the parent has to hold the line every day, against a child who has nothing to do but push. When the device enforces the rule, the parent stops being the obstacle, and the argument mostly disappears.

Praise the process, not the grade. “You started without being asked” or “you kept going when it got hard” builds the habit. “You’re so clever” builds a child who avoids things that might prove otherwise.

Rewards: what works and what backfires

This reward sequence is what Applatch Kids automates.
